Earth-like and Venus-like planets collide. Could it happen to us?
By: William Atkins

A planet similar to the size of Earth and a planet like Venus recently collided and were destroyed as they orbited around the star BD+20°307 in a mature solar system like our own. It is being called “the ultimate extinction event.”

Astronomers (probably) take 1st direct pix of planet orbiting star
By: William Atkins

Canadian astronomers have discovered and photographed for the first time what they think is a normal sized exosolar planet (exoplanet) orbiting a star other than the Sun. However, if true it could change our theories of planet formation.

North Star dims for a century, suddenly gets brighter
By: William Atkins

After about one hundred years of growing increasingly dimmer, the North Star (Polaris), according to international astronomers, is now growing brighter. Why it’s happening is a mystery to astronomers.

First for astronomers: Observed birth of supernova
By: William Atkins

U.S. astronomers Alicia Soderberg and Edo Berger, Princeton University, were observing the NCG 2770 galaxy when they noticed a rapidly brightening spot, which eventually faded. They had just seen, for the first time by anyone on Earth, the birth of a supernova using x-ray emissions.

Fast spinning, wildly orbiting pulsar puzzles astronomers
By: William Atkins

Astronomers are perplexed at a rapidly spinning pulsar, known as J1903+0327, because it is orbiting a star similar to the Sun in a very unusual orbit—two actions that haven’t been seen before.

NASA's supernova hunt in Milky Way ends with discovery of G1.9+0.3
By: William Atkins

Using data from the space-based NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory and the ground-based NRAO Very Large Array, astronomers just found a supernova within our Milky Way galaxy that exploded about 140 years ago. NASA scientists took fifty years to find it.

MARVELS project by NASA looks for new planets
By: William Atkins

The Multi-object Apache Point Observatory Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS) is set to survey about 11,000 stars. Beginning in 2008, astronomers hope to find at least 150 planets never before seen circling some of these stars.

U.S. astronomers see first magnetic reversal of star other than Sun
By: William Atkins

Astronomers have found the first evidence of a star changing its magnetic field. The Sun is known to reverse its north and south magnetic poles, but astronomers had never seen another star do it. Now they have seen it in tau Bootis.

Life-supporting Earth-like planets could be common
By: William Atkins

American astronomer Michael R. Meyer and his team of scientists studied over three hundred stars with Sun-like masses, and concluded that rocky planets like Earth could be orbiting about at least half of the Sun-like stars found in the Milky Way galaxy—and supporting intelligent and/or primitive life.
