The new “Dr Phil Burgess”, aka Group MD of Public Policy and Comms, David Quilty, has knitted Opposition Spokesman Bruce Billson a lovely message effectively telling him to get stuffed, and that as far as Telstra is concerned, structural separation is not an option.

Australia’s NBN and FttN – fibre to the nowhere?
By: Alex Zaharov-Reutt
Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) has reached a “key moment” with August 22 set as the date by which carriers must submit the remaining “network information” the Government wants to send to NBN bidders, so they can then start finalising their NBN proposals. But as telecoms analyst Paul Budde states, the FttN proposed for Australia is already out of date, with FttH the preferred standard being rolled out overseas.

Australian Government further delays “National Broadband Network”
By: Alex Zaharov-Reutt
With any Australian fibre-based broadband network still up to 5 years away, the date of completion just got extended by at least 6 months as the Australian Federal Government extends the time for “robust proposals” to be submitted for consideration. As usual, the Federal Opposition is outraged!

Invest in FTTN in haste: repent at leisure
By: Stuart Corner
Having given scant regard to examining all the options, the Rudd Government is driving the National Broadband Network project at breakneck speed to deliver on its pre-election promise of multimegabit services to 98 percent of the population within five years. Analysis from the UK, where these issues have been studied in much greater detail, suggests this might not be a wise move.

Telstra's $15b FTTN estimate "scaremongering"
By: Stuart Corner
Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo's recent claim that the cost of rolling out an FTTN network to 98 percent of Australian homes would be closer to $15b than the $8 billion in the government's estimate has been dismissed as "a vain attempt to scare off the opposition," but some industry players think his estimate is, if anything, too low.

New Zealand National Party promises fibre to the home
By: Stuart Corner
The countries are different and so are the political parties but the pre-election announcement by New Zealand's National Party that it would invest $NZ1.5 billion over the next six years to rollout fibre to the majority of New Zealand homes bears many similarities to the Australian Labor Party's pre-election pledge of March 2007: and just look at the mess the ALP has now got itself into!

ACCC's role in evaluating broadband network proposals is indeed 'critical'
By: Stuart Corner
Communications minister Stephen Conroy has sought to defend the evaluation process for responses to his RFP for a national broadband network, describing the ACCC's role as critical. Critical as in: "having a decisive or crucial importance in the success or failure of something" it is not. Try critical as in "having the potential to become disastrous" instead.
