Astronomical first: Hubble sees an exosolar planet!
By: Stephen Withers
For the first time, astronomers have directly observed a planet orbiting a star other than our own Sun. The historic image was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Astronomers (probably) take 1st direct pix of planet orbiting star
By: William Atkins
Canadian astronomers have discovered and photographed for the first time what they think is a normal sized exosolar planet (exoplanet) orbiting a star other than the Sun. However, if true it could change our theories of planet formation.

ABC NewsRadio axes StarStuff program – why?
By: Alex Zaharov-Reutt
ABC NewsRadio, Australia’s only 24 hour continuous news service, has axed one of its longest running programs because it wants to divert funding elsewhere. The program? StarStuff, the only space, science, astronomy and cosmology show on Australian radio. What a shame!

MARVELS project by NASA looks for new planets
By: William Atkins
The Multi-object Apache Point Observatory Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS) is set to survey about 11,000 stars. Beginning in 2008, astronomers hope to find at least 150 planets never before seen circling some of these stars.

Intelligent ET life probably not likely, according to English study
By: William Atkins
New planets around other stars (called extrasolar planets or exoplanets) are being discovered all of the time by astronomers, however, a new mathematical study by an English environmental scientist states that intelligent extraterrestrial (ET) life in the universe is “probably rare.”

Aliens could see Earth as haven for life
By: William Atkins
According to a study performed by U.S. and Spanish astronomers, alien astronomers could “hypothetically” identify Earth as a planet orbiting the Sun and observe our planet with clouds and oceans—just like we are trying to do with planets circling other stars.

Where oh where is the comet?
By: William Atkins
That’s what they said when NASA scientists decided to send their Deep Impact spacecraft to Comet 85P/Boethin. When they looked again for the comet, it was no where to be found. So, Deep Impact was re-direced to Comet Hartley 2.
