A pioneer of sleep medicine since 1969, Murray Johns incredible passion for research and development has seen him treat people with a whole range of sleep disorders. A particular interest in daytime drowsiness saw him develop the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a questionnaire that has become a world standard for measuring a person’s general level of daytime sleepiness. In 2002, Murray retired from clinical practice and established Sleep Diagnostics Pty Ltd with the aim of reducing road toll due to drowsy driving. Following greater research into drowsiness and its measurement, the Optalert was created – a special pair of driving glasses that warns drivers when they show signs of drowsiness. Optalert is currently being adopted by the road transport and mining industries in Australia and elsewhere. Optalert is also being developed for train drivers and others.
