Broadband Australia 2008

The original forum for debating the future of Australia’s broadband infrastructure, now in its 3rd year!

24th – 25th July 2008 | Sydney Marriott Hotel

Why address the issue?
• One of the main promises that carried Labor to power in the general election was to connect 98% of the population with high speed broadband services, now several months into term, there are still many questions that remain on our new broadband network but the main ones remain - who will build it? And at what cost?
• There is of course still the legacy left by the previous regime in the form of the OPEL consortium. How will this develop and what will be the impact of providing rural Australia with the promised high speed wireless network? Is WiMAX up to the job?
• The regulatory regime is under pressure to evolve but what is its future role? And what impact will this have on the development of the industry? It is essential to consider the not insignificant role of the regulator, which could ultimately make the difference on how and when we get our high-speed broadband network.

What will we be dealing with?
• There are many technologies currently in the mix for delivering broadband in Australia but how have they progressed so far? Through a number of case study based presentations we will examine current deployments of broadband delivery over 3G, fibre, WiMAX, and the next evolution of DSL.
• Modern high-speed networks are inevitably going to change the face of the telecoms industry globally, with telecoms and media industries converging. The conference will examine how broadband can be an enabler of convergence but also take a look at strategies for traditional operators to step out from the threat of becoming a bit pipe.
• All of the issues that are central to this critical issue including:
• Connecting Australia – connecting the broadband policies
• Evaluating the role of the incumbent operator in delivering the future of Australia’s broadband
• Delivering affordable high speed broadband to rural Australia
• Improving broadband infrastructure whilst fostering competition
• Understanding the future face of the broadband market
• The future role of the regulator in the Australian Broadband market
• Convergence and the evolution of broadband services
• Broadband as the enabler for operators to move towards a converged telecoms/media business model
• Broadband the ultimate service enabler
• Backhaul creation key to Australia’s broadband network
• Technologies at the heart of effective backhaul creation
• The role of international bandwidth in delivering the domestic broadband network
• Utilising the 3G network for broadband delivery
• Rolling out a high capacity FTTN network
• WiMAX delivering rural broadband for Australia
• Evolving existing networks beyond ADSL2+
• What is the right technological mix for Australia?
