Biomedical Imaging Using MRI
The principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will be explained and examples of applications of high magnetic field MRI systems will be presented. These will include applications in animal models of human disease and examples of human brain studies. Cerebral tissue contains water molecules that are diffusing due to their inherent thermal energy (temperature).
The dependence of contrast in MR images upon the diffusion of water in the brain will also be explained and examples of new applications in the exploration of brain structure on the micron scale will be presented.
Professor Roger Ordidge did his undergraduate degree in physics at Nottingham University and PhD in the same institution with the Nobel prize winner, Sir Peter Mansfield, where he helped build the first MRI scanner.
He has worked in industry and as an academic at Nottingham University before becoming a Professor at Oakland University, Michigan and then moving to Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering at University College London as the Joel Professor of Physics Applied to Medicine.
He moved to The University of Melbourne and the Melbourne Brain Imaging Centre (MBIC) in 2011 to become the Director of the Melbourne Brain Imaging Centre and Chair in Imaging Science in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience. MBIC currently houses a new Siemens combined PET/CT scanner and, in 2013, a 7 Tesla whole body MRI research system will be installed.

The course covers the body of knowledge required for TOGAF 9 certification. Successful candidates, after examination, will be registered via the Open Group as certified TOGAF 9 Architects, becoming part of a select international community.

Richard Horton is a partner in the Silicon Valley office of DLA Piper. He is both a corporate and intellectual property lawyer focusing on tech and cleantech angel and venture financings, M&A and strategic IP and technology licensing and advice.
Richard represents numerous Australian tech and cleantech businesses and investors looking to enter the US market, in particular Silicon Valley. He is admitted to practice in both California and Australia and actively advises clients under both US and Australian law. In addition to representing numerous Australian companies and investors looking to do business in Silicon Valley, Richard is also a mentor and exclusive legal counsel to various Australian incubators, including Startmate, Ignition Labs and Pushstart.
Richard began his legal career in Australia, coming to the United States in late 1999. Before joining DLA Piper, he spent 3 years as a partner in the San Francisco office of Minter Ellison and 5 years in the technology and corporate group of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Prior to leaving Australia, Richard was a senior associate in the Sydney office of Mallesons Stephens Jaques and spent 12 months on secondment with Australia’s dominant telecommunications company, Telstra Corporation. After 12 years in Silicon Valley, over the past 18 months Richard has spent nearly half of his time in Australia working from the Sydney office of DLA Piper.
