Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

PowerTel launches Australia's first mid-band Ethernet access

Business and wholesale customers with national telecommunications’ specialist, PowerTel, will now have more speed, availability and accessibility with the introduction of Australia’s first mid-band Ethernet product.

PowerTel’s new offering will substantially increase the company’s metro Ethernet coverage in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

PowerTel’s Managing Director, Paul Broad, said the introduction of the mid-band Ethernet service was further confirmation of the strength and capability of the company, reinforcing its marketplace position as one of Australia’s leading wholesale telecommunications’ suppliers.

“For many companies who were previously limited to 2Mb services, PowerTel’s new product will open the market to allow them to access broadband business applications as well as providing greater access for multi-site companies with high bandwidth WAN demands,” Mr. Broad said.

As an example, our first wholesale customer was able to expand their data connection from 512Kb to 10Mb (20 times), significantly improving their interoffice communication capabilities.

“Mid-band Ethernet is a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional applications and the launch of the product is a direct response to customer needs,” Mr Broad said.

By the end of 2007, PowerTel believes it will expand its wholesale customer reach sixty fold to deliver Ethernet access to about 50% of all businesses within Australia’s four largest capital cities.

A symmetrical service over existing copper infrastructure, PowerTel’s service delivers pure Ethernet at speeds of between 2 and 40Mbps. For most carriers, these speeds are typically available on fibre optic infrastructure only.

Ethernet has become the business market’s preferred choice for delivering a range of services because of its simplicity, scalability and low cost.

More and more bandwidth hungry multimedia and real time applications such as VoIP and Video on Demand are driving the uptake of flexible and cost-effective bandwidth options that can be easily addressed by Ethernet.
