Toshiba launches style icon in mobile computing

Toshiba (Australia) Pty Limited Information Systems Division (ISD) today launched its flagship notebook of 2007, the Portégé R400. Designed specifically for the busy executive and style-conscious, the Portégé R400 is a lightweight 12-inch tablet PC that has a white glossy finish and world first technology innovations such as Toshiba Edge Display.

World first - View email and calendar alerts even when the notebook is in sleep-mode
The Portégé R400 is the world’s first notebook computer to include a new innovation where real-time email and calendar alerts can be viewed from a discrete OLED display on the front of the notebook, even when the notebook is closed or in sleep-mode.
This new feature provides executives with a way to stay abreast of appointment changes and incoming email alerts instantly, without opening their notebook.
This technology is a combination of Microsoft® Active Notifications, which synchronises email and calendar information, and the Toshiba Edge Display, a display located at the front edge of the notebook.
Design is a key feature of the Portégé R400
Designed for executives at the forefront of technology and trends, the Portégé R400 features a new design that will be incorporated throughout Toshiba’s upcoming range of mobile computers.
Featuring a white and black colour scheme, the tablet PC has a high-gloss white casing and features an ultraviolet, clear coat cover for greater scratch resistance.
The Portégé R400 is also the world’s first latch-free tablet PC, streamlining the design of the notebook.
Driving innovation through partnership
Toshiba and Microsoft began collaborating on the Portégé R400 more than two years ago and the product represents a significant investment from Toshiba in research and development.

"The Portégé R400 showcases the expertise of both Toshiba and Microsoft and is an example of the genius possible when two companies join forces and make a solid commitment to research and development,” said Mark Whittard, general manager, Toshiba ISD.
“It may seem like a simple concept to have a display where you can view emails and calendar appointments without opening or turning on the notebook, but this represents a significant technology breakthrough that offers a leap forward in productivity for the mobile user.”
“We are proud of our unique relationship with Microsoft in jointly working on projects to develop hardware innovation that compliments software innovation.
With a solid commitment to research and development, Toshiba continues to lead the mobile computing market into the future of converged devices with innovative products like the Portégé R400,” he said.
Always connectedSynchronisation with Toshiba’s ConfigFree software allows the notebook to detect and automatically connect to the strongest and most reliable network connection available, switching between 3G [optional external], Wi-Fi®, Gigabit and Ethernet connections to deliver information instantly. The Portégé R400 also features an enhanced “instant on” feature where it can turn on quickly from sleep-mode. This feature is made possible by Toshiba’s hardware advancements utilising Microsoft’s new Vista operating system.
Leading security and reliabilityProviding the most advanced security, system protection and connectivity available, the Portégé R400 incorporates Toshiba’s EasyGuard technology, featuring a biometric fingerprint reader, multi-level passwords, TPM encryption module patented, three-dimensional HDD accelerometer, shock absorbent casing and a spill resistant keyboard.
