Smart mobile devices a major part of TechOne cloud strategy

Smartphones and tablet devices from both Apple and Android manufacturers are a major focus of the new cloud strategy announced today by enterprise applications vendor Technology One. The Australian software company's founding executive chairman Adrian Di Marco told a packed audience that clients had indicated that smart mobile devices were the way they wanted to access many of their business applications.

Mr Di Marco outlined his vision of a smart mobile appliances future for enterprise applications to about 1000 delegates to the 3-yearly TechnologyOne Evolve conference on the Gold Coast this week.

"When I travel these days the only device I take with me is an iPhone. I no longer carry a laptop, an iPad is too big, so if I can't do something on the iPhone, I don't do it," Mr Di Marco said during his keynote presentation.

"In the last quarter, Apple sold 4 million Macs, 8 million iPads and 16 million iPhones. So an incredible 24 million of the products it sold were smart mobile devices.

"People want to see more apps on smart mobile devices so we're very focussed on the Apple mobile devices."

As part of the smart mobile devices strategy, TechnologyOne has started releasing platform specific apps for the iPhone and iPad, with Mr Di Marco outlining a two-pronged cloud strategy..

"There are two classes of cloud apps," he told iTWire. "There will be browser delivered apps that will available on any Internet device and they will be suitable for back-office types of applications. And for where it makes sense, there will be apps that we have developed for the app stores of vendors such as those we have already developed for Apple."

So where does that leave Android? Not far behind, according to Mr Di Marco.

"We started with Apple but we're working on Android and we expect to have those available in three to four months."

Mr Di Marco said the first browser based back-office would also be available in three months.
