WD aims 3TB drives at AV market

The growing use of digital video will be assisted by WD's latest high-capacity drives.

PVRs, digital video surveillance and other AV applications are storing more and more data. To help keep up, WD has announced 2.5 and 3TB versions of its AV-GP SATA drive family.

The 2.5TB model costs $199, and the 3TB version is $219. With such a small difference, why would you go for the smaller unit unless you had to hit a price point?

The drives have sufficient performance to capture 12 simultaneous HD video streams, and are designed for always-on environments.

WD warns that drives larger than 2.19TB are unsupported by Windows XP, and can only be used as secondary drives under 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista. There may also be compatibility issues with the motherboard or bridge devices.
