The new entry-level StorageWorks X1000 and higher-end X3000 systems unify file and application storage.They run on Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2008 Standard x64 Edition and include Microsoft iSCSI Software Target and HP X1000 Automated Storage Manager Software.
The primary advantage of the new systems is that they can be used both as file servers and as application servers, or both at the same time. They can also serve as storage for virtual deployments.
In addition to the Microsoft Windows Network (SMB/CFIS) protocol, the servers also support NFS, HTTP, FTP, and WebDAV.
The X3000 units also provide ways to connect a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Fibre Channel storage arrays or storage area networks, as well as enabling IP-based services.
Both the X1000 and X3000 are based on quad-core Intel Xeon processors and come in multiple configurations.
