Where do Microsoft and Novell want to go today?

Business IT - Technology

Three months after announcing their deal to provide support for SUSE Linux alongside Windows, Microsoft and Novell have begun to provide more details about their roadmap.

The first step will be to allow SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 to run as a guest under Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2, thanks to a service pack for Virtual Server that will be released during 2Q07.

Enterprise Server 10 will be supported as "an enlightened guest" under the next-but-one release of Windows Server (due in 4Q07 or 1Q08), while the next release of Windows Server ("Longhorn") will - when it is released - run as "a paravirtualised guest" under Enterprise Server 10.

Efforts are being made to simplify the management of mixed Windows Server and Enterprise Server 10 installations via Web Services, and to improve interoperability between Active Directory and eDirectory.

Microsoft has already released an Open XML/ODF translator for Word, and Novell is set to release a similar translator for its edition of OpenOffice.org. Both companies say they will continue to work on similar translators for spreadsheets and presentations.
