Customers of the engin VoIP service can now make calls via public, and private WiFi access points using the new Nokia N80 Internet Edition cellphone which incorporates WLAN connectivity and VoIP support.

The N80 Internet Edition was launched internationally in August 2006 and started shipping in Australia in October 2006. According to Nokia Australia's communications manager, Louise Ingram "theoretically it will work with any SIP based VoIP offering. Prudence however dictates that local testing and compatibility take place to ensure as seamless consumer experience. Nokia Australia has worked with Engin do just this in our local market."
Engin CEO, Ilka Tales, told iTWire: "You download the client by connecting the phone to the Internet over a WLAN, or via PC. By mid March we expect to be able to offer delivery via SMS."
When the phone attempts to connect to any wireless LAN for the first time, it will ask the user for their username and password and, subsequently will automatically authenticate. Tales said the phone could make calls in three different ways: normal cellular, Engin VoIP via WLAN or Engin VoIP via cellular data. If either GPRS or WLAN are available callers will have the option of making the call via cellular or Engin but not, at present, of choosing between cellular data or WLAN, Tales said the call would always go via WLAN if available: only the cellular or Engin options are displayed.
