RIM takes page out of Apple's book with BlackBerry Pearl

Business IT - Technology

While Apple tantalises the taste buds of smartphone users with the currently unattainable iPhone, it's business as usual for RIM which has released another new model of its wildly popular Blackberry phone. In fact, the new white Blackberry Pearl model could be said to have drawn from Apple's design expertise, at least as far as colour is concerned.

Like Apple's MacBook, the Blackberry Pearl now comes in two non-colors - black and white. This may appear to some as the new hip design mode of the decade.

In the US, RIM has done an exclusive deal with German-based mobile carrier T-mobile. Once again, this could signal a trend for smartphone vendors. Apple last week announced that its new iPhone will be available exclusively in the US through the country's largest mobile carrier, Cingular.

RIM is touting the new Blackberry as more than just a business phone and messaging device. In addition to the messaging, email and Internet browsing options, the Blackberry Pearl includes a 1.3 megapixel camera with zoom and built in flash; a multimedia player with support for MP3 and AAC music files, as well as MPEG4 and H.263 video.

“The BlackBerry Pearl has proven that it’s possible to provide a full-featured handset at an attractive price point with an uncompromising user experience and an extremely small, light and stylish design,” said Mark Guibert, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, Research In Motion. “We are delighted by the immediate success of the BlackBerry Pearl in the market and we are pleased to build on this momentum with the addition of another stunning color and finish.”

Despite the emphasis on style and expanded feature set, the new RIM smartphone comes with just 64MB built-in flash memory, which is expandable via a MicroSD slot. With only a 1.3 megapixel camera and limited storage as standard, some may view the new Blackberry as merely a business phone dressed up in casual clothes.

While the power, feature set and finish of the Blackberry Pearl may not match that of the iPhone, however, it has one major advantage - it is available now.
