Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Primus Telecom, which launched its TalkBroadband residential VoIP service via an ATA, in March this year, has added softphone access and is promoting the service with a free two week trial offering four hours worth of calls.
A coupon published in The Age newspaper today can be taken to a newsagent and exchanged for a headset and CD Rom containing the softphone (Windows only). 50,000 sets have been distributed. In addition anyone can download the softphone from the Primus website and get the free trial. Access does not require a Primus broadband service: it will work with any other.
The trial marks the introduction of a softphone option for the Primus service. However the company has given no indication of when a Mac version will be available. Major rivals engin, My Net Fone and Freshtel all offer Mac softphones.
The four hour trial includes free calls to anywhere in Australia apart from special service and mobile numbers and to the 15 most-called countries. Normal charges are 10 cents for standard fixed line calls within Australia and from 2.7 cents per minute to the top 15 overseas destinations. Calls to other TalkBroadband customers are free.
Primus, Australia's fourth largest telco, claims the distinction of being the first of the major carriers to offer a residential Internet telephone service. TalkBroadband is based on the service offered by its US parent in the US under the name Lingo and in Canada as TalkBroadband.
