Palm Treo 750v arrives, with bells and whistles

Business IT - Technology

Palm has released its long-awaited and much-speculated upon Treo 750v, its first 3G smartphone. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0 PC Edition with Palm enhancements and has been launched to Vodafone customers in Europe.
It is also the first Palm product running Windows Mobil 5.0 to be offered in Europe. Palm's first Windows Mobile device was launched in the US late last year through Verizon Wireless, part owned by Vodafone.

Most of the features of the product have been widely anticipated, The big surprise, however, is the inclusion of a suite of software enhancements to Windows Mobile 5.0 developed by Palm. These include:

- the ability to "dial by name" with a few keystrokes on the keyboard, perform a web search directly from the 'Today Screen' and perform one-touch dialing with personalised photo speed dials;

- the ability to manage a call directly from the 'Today Screen' and "stay on top of voicemail with on-screen, VCR-like icons, such as rewind, delete and fast-forward controls for easy navigation";

- the ability to ignore a call and quickly compose a text message, such as "In a meeting" or "Can't talk"; and

- a dedicated messaging application for SMS/MMS that is organised in a "chat thread" so users can reference prior messages and use emoticons for a personal touch.

The device comes with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile for music and video, Bluetooth; a mini-SD expansion slot; and a 1.3 megapixel still and video camera.
