If you had a 3D printer what would you print?  In Delaware, a hospital decided to print out an exoskeleton to help Emma, a 2 year old girl, fully use her arms.

A lot has been said about the negative effects of technology in society but this story aims to turn that around.

Emma, a 2 year old girl from the US suffers from a rare disease called arthrogryposis which prevents her from raising her arms without help.  This irreversible condition affects 1 out of every 3000 live births.

In response to Emma’s condition a Delaware hospital has used 3D printing to create (print?) a new exoskeleton for Emma that enables her to gain much need motor function from her arms.

Rather than an explanation as to how it works, watch the video for yourself.

A Stratasys 3D printer was used to create Emma’s self-dubbed “magic arms” of which she is on her second set.  Though the exact model is not known, Stratasys have recently released a 3D Printer that has broken the $10,000 barrier (just).  At $9,999 the Stratsys Mojo Printer is a professional grade 3D printer which marks a positve step in the right direction for this technology moving forward.

This can only be the start of a very bright future for 3D printing and its uses and applications seem almost infinite.
