Windows 8 is officially 'done' - Microsoft's latest operating system has been released to manufacturing, with general availability set for August 26.

Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing, and developers, partners and customers will soon have access to the finalised product.

Developers with MSDN subscriptions and IT professionals with TechNet subscriptions will be able to download Windows 8 on August 15.

The following day, Software Assurance customers and Microsoft Partner Network members will gain access to the OS.

Then on August 20, Microsoft Action Pack Providers will join the club.

For everybody else, Windows 8 will be available online from October 26.

"The previews of Windows 8 (Developer, Consumer, Release) have been the most widely and deeply used test releases of any product we have ever done," said Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows and Windows Live division.

"Over 16 million PCs actively participated in these programs, including approximately 7 million on the Release Preview that started 8 weeks ago.

"The depth and breadth of testing validate the readiness of Windows 8 for the market."
