3G operators watch out: Freshtel wants your phone revenues

Business IT - Technology

VoIP network operator and service provider, Freshtel (ASX: FRE), is gearing up to enable 3G handsets to be used to make VoIP calls over its network.
The company says it has completed internal trials of technology that has allowed users of 3G handsets to make and receive calls to and from its Voicedot network, the VoIP network underpinning its own retail service and which it sells 'white label' to other VoIP service providers.

It says that anyone using an Internet capable 3G handset loaded with Freshtel software would be able to make free calls to other customers on its Voicedot network anywhere in the world.

According to Freshtel, its software on the 3G handset "has sophisticated functionality with features such as real-time account balance, contact lists, multiple numbers for contacts, messaging functionality, and diversion features via web interface.

The company is contemplating offering a bundled service comprised of mobile VoIP, Wi-Fi and Internet telephony solutions to its clients. CEO Michael Carew said; "Freshtel is in a position to encroach not only on fixed line telephony but also move into the mobile arena.
