Where physical damage or failure has occurred, data recovery is a job for the experts - and is usually expensive. But where data loss is caused by accidental file deletion, mistaken reformatting or other types of 'soft' damage, software may be the answer.
Adding to the options for do-it-yourself data recovery is the new and completely redesigned
version 10 of Kroll's Ontrack EasyRecovery. Available for Mac and Windows, the program comes in a free trial version so potential customers can see which of their lost files can be recovered before they shell out for a paid licence.

Ontrack EasyRecovery 10 is offered in three versions. The $79 Home edition is described as "a quick and easy-to-use tool to recover digital photos, movies, music and important documents."
Professional ($149) adds a deep scanning tool and other utilities, while Enterprise ($999) handles hardware and software RAID recovery and includes network support to recover remote systems.
Note that although most software is sold with a perpetual licence, Ontrack EasyRecovery 10 is only offered on a one-year licence.
