Samsung starts production of smaller 1Gb memory chips

Using a 80 nanometer manufacturing process, Korean memory maker, Samsung Electronics has begun production of smaller and cheaper 1Gb DDR2 memory chips.

Moving from 90 nanometer to 80 nanometer production has enabled Samsung to make the chips about one third smaller and in greater quantities, which reduces the cost.

The release of the memory hungry Vista operating system in 2007 is expected to drive demand for minimum system configurations of 1GB RAM, with 2GB being standard and Samsung is predicting a big hike in memory demand for the coming year.
