System Center 2012 goes to RC, free to download

Business IT - Technology

Microsoft has made available a pre-release version of their much awaited System Center 2012 suite of infrastructure management tools. With a focus on cloud computing as well as improvements to system deployment and protection, the updated suite aims to build on the success of the current versions while adding powerful new functionality.

Not surprisingly, Microsoft has jumped onto the bandwagon and is spruiking their cloud story to everyone and anyone who will listen. But this update to the suite that was released in 2007 offers some significant improvements.

Cross Platform Support

In the past, Microsoft took a very self-centred approach to infrastructure and software. However, their DNA has changed, perhaps as a result of the many legal issues they have faced over allegedly anti-competitive behaviour. System Center's management console provides IT managers with the fabled "single pane of glass" view at all their systems.

This includes support for multiple hypervisors including VMWare vSphere, and Citrix XenServer as well as their own Hyper-V. They can monitor servers running Sun Solaris and various Linux and Unix distributions and integrate toolsets from HP, CA, BMC, EMC, and VMware into automated workflows.
