Palm to offer first 3G WCDMA Treo, on Vodafone network

Business IT - Technology

Aiming to capitalise on the nascent market for push email to mobile devices, Palm has announced that it will launch the first 3G WCDMA version of its Treo handheld in Europe later this year, on the Vodafone network and running the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system overlaid with the Palm user interface.
The device will use Microsoft's Messaging and Security Feature Pack with Direct Push Technology to support 'push email' services. It will be available first to Vodafone customers in the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands, before the end of  2006.

Palm cites research from the Radicati Group indicating that only an estimated two percent of business email inboxes worldwide are accessed via mobile devices.

Palm has given few details of the new devices, saying it will provide more information closer to commercial availability.

The dominant player in the enterprise push email market is Research in Motion with its BlackBerry. However to get the full functionality of the service requires a dedicated BlackBerry handheld: BlackBerry software for Windows Mobile and other operating systems does not deliver the full range of features.

The leading competitor to BlackBerry in the US with a software only solution for Windows, Symbian and Palm mobile operating systems is Good Technology but it has only just this week made its first foray into international markets, by signing a deal with Telstra in Australia.
