The final prediction may be the most contentious. The company suggests that PCs will be increasingly locked down as a way of guarding against zero-day attacks, along with additional content filtering and network restrictions. A fixed configuration may be appropriate where there are many people doing essentially the same job (eg, in a call centre), and it may be accepted in hot-desking environments where no personalisation of the workspace is permitted.

In other situations, employees may need a degree of flexibility when it comes to installing and configuring software, and a PC's wallpaper may be considered as personal as the framed photo on the physical desktop.
