Ericsson offers Euro15,000 prizes in Android app contest

Business IT - Technology

Ericsson has launched a competition offering a team prize of Euro15,000 for the best Android app developed by a team studying at university and one for a team in a company with less than 100 employees.

Entries to the competition, the Ericsson Applications Awards - Code for Cash 2011, will be accepted from teams of two to four people anywhere in the world. Participants need to create an Android-based application (web or native) that uses at least one Ericsson Labs API and is related to the theme 'Connected Thing'.

The winning team in each category will receive Eur15,000 and Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Sony Ericsson will also be represented on the judging panel as part of its partnership in the competition.

This is the second year Ericsson has run the competition. Last years' event was won by students from the Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland whose CallerProfiler for Android app combined social networking with IP telephony to display information from Facebook and other social networking sites on a phone when a call is received.

The competition will close on March 31 2011 and the results will be announced in June. Full details at www.ericssonapplicationawards.com.
