Linksys has launched, in the US, its first two telephone handsets designed for VoIP over WiFi, claiming they will enable users to make low-cost VoIP calls through 802.11g wireless networks.
Once connected to the Internet via a WiFi hotspot, users will be able to select the appropriate phone and VoIP service provider for their specific needs, Linksys says.
The top end model, the WIP330 (retail price $US369.99) has an "intuitive user interface [that] allows users to quickly and easily configure the handset to access available wireless-G networks...including public hotspots which require user name or password access." Its built-in web browser can be used to access web-based email, view web sites or receive Internet-based video.
It supports SIP v2 standards, IEEE 802.11b/g, has a 2.2-inch colour LCD display, support for QoS, supports 3-way conferencing, call hold and resume, and caller ID, and auto-provisioning using HTTP or HTTPS for configuration and upgrades.
The cheaper model, the WIP300 ($US219.99) has only a 1.8 inch LCD, no QoS support, no facility for auto provisioning and no support for conferencing.
Linksys says more WiFi phone products will be launched in the second half of 2006.
