Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update, but there's no mention of AirPrint support. There's also a security update for Mac OS X 10.5.8.
The pace of developer releases of Mac OS X 10.6.5 led many to anticipate an early November arrival of the latest version of the operating system, and it showed up this morning.
Some commentators have been suggesting that 10.6.5 would have to include AirPrint as that feature is coming in the imminent iOS 4.2, but that's a furphy. Yes, you would need AirPrint support in Mac OS X if you were planning to print from your iPad or iPhone to a printer attached to a Mac, but some printers - initially ePrint models from HP - handle AirPrint directly. Other printer manufacturers such as
Lexmark are considering the adoption of AirPrint.
So what does the 10.6.5 update deliver? As usual, Apple refers to "general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac".
Specific issues addressed relate to Exchange server, printing (including the use of certain HP printers with an AirPort Extreme), dragging contacts from Address Book to iCal, Wikipedia information failing to display correctly in Dictionary, OpenType font spacing, the display of stacks from the Dock, and the performance of MainStage (part of Logic Studio) on certain Macs.
It also speeds certain image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture, and improves the stability and performance of graphics applications and games.
