Vendors always make their products sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread. But it's relatively unusual for them to actively encourage the media to talk to their customers without listening in on the conversation, as is the case with storage vendor Compellent.


As previously reported, storage vendor Compellent this week revealed its plans for the local market.

The company offers a scalable SAN product that automatically handles storage tiering at the block level rather than requiring the promotion or demotion of entire files, among other features.

"Every storage company out there says the same thing... [but] we say 'talk to our customers'," said Brian Bell, Compellent's vice president of worldwide sales.

So iTWire took up that challenge.

Cameron Smith, core systems manager at home builder Metricon, said his company had been in the situation where two older EMC SANs were due for replacement. EMC proposed a "forklift upgrade," so the company decided to look further afield.
