Software AG helps shrink Adabas databases

A new tool from Software AG allows the size of Adabas databases to be reduced by archiving infrequently used data.

Data Archiving for Adabas moves infrequently used data from a production database into a vault. Once safely transferred, the data is removed from the original database.

"With as much as 85% of database content typically dormant, organisations can save money, boost response time, and increase availability with the use of Data Archiving for Adabas," said Peter Kuerpick, chief product officer and member of Software AG's executive board.

"By just taking the data they don't need every day, removing it from their production database and storing it in a vault for future reference or audit, customers can reduce the load on their production database and save up to 30 per cent in storage costs," he added.

The vault - which can itself be an Adabas database or a set of files on Linux, Unix or a mainframe - can take data from multiple databases. It incorporates a search function which helps meet data retention regulations.

Software AG officials noted that reducing the size of the live database also reduces the time taken to process transactions, reorganise the database, and perform backups.
