Microsoft has begun a second beta release of its Windows Intune system maintenance product. Pricing has also been disclosed.
The second public beta of Windows Intune opens up he PC management and security to a wider - though still limited - audience. Microsoft has has extended the program to 10,000 users in US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, UK, and Italy that can test Intune on at least five PCs.
Windows Intune is a cloud-based service that provides a centralised web-based console (for use by in-house IT staff or by an outside provider) to manage and secure Windows-based PCs.
Features include malware protection and the Software Assurance Program, which provides upgrade rights to Windows 7 Enterprise. Intune can be used with XP, Vista, or Windows 7.
It allows administrators to set policies for malware protection, firewall settings, and updates. To assist service providers manage systems belonging to multiple customers, the second beta includes the ability to use a single console for that purpose.
Intune can report on the software installed on PCs, update status, and licences purchased and installed (to "help you determine whether your organization has adequate license agreement coverage for all product installations").
