Inmarsat will formally launch its first handheld satellite phone, the IsatPhone Pro, at CommunicAsia next week after what, by its own admission has been "years of development and months of hype," - and Australian company World Reach stands to make $ millions from the product.
The IsatPhone Pro was
announced in January and introduced to delegates at Inmarsat's Global Partner Conference earlier this month. Full specifications of the phone were released in April.
World Reach (ASX: WRR) subsidiary, Beam Communications, announced in March that it been appointed as the developer, manufacturer and distributor of docking units for the IsatPhone Pro, saying: "The planned sales of the Inmarsat docking units is expected to commence in the first quarter of next financial year and is anticipated to exceed $US7m over the initial two year period."
As well as a standard docking unit, Beam will produce vehicular and maritime versions, and a version to accommodate indoor use. Inmarsat also loaned Beam $US3.18m to fund product development and initial working capital costs, with the money to be repaid as a percentage of sales.
The IsatPhone Pro will retail for $US699, although pricing promotions are expected to bring the end-user price to $US500-$US600, Inmarsat says. Retail airtime rates will be about $US1 per minute.
