CIO confidence; a dead cat bounce?

At a time when banks are shedding IT roles by the dozen, it seems counter-intuitive that 83 per cent of the nation’s chief information officers should report they are confident about the future of their business to the extent that 45 per cent expect to hire IT staff in the first six months of the year. The question remains – is this a dead cat bounce?

Data centre big on hot air containment

Business IT - Technology

Brisbane telecommunications provider, Over The Wire, has launched its Datacentre 2 at its facility in Spring Hill in Queensland.

It claims that the facility is one of the largest installations of data centre infrastructure provider APC's Hot-Aisle Containment System (HACS) in Australia, in terms of useable rack space.

According to Over The Wire "The HACS channels the hot air produced by the equipment in the rack, into a fully enclosed aisle. This containment allows intelligent, optimised control of the temperatures within the racks and more efficient cooling of hot air than traditional hot aisle/cold aisle facilities.

"As opposed to traditional environmental control systems, which inefficiently reduce the temperature of the entire room, hot-aisle containment eliminates the over-provisioning of cooling and is therefore much more environmentally friendly."

Over The Wire CEO, Brent Paddon, said: "We strongly believe hot-aisle containment was the best choice for our requirements. The system is not only environmentally friendly [but] the cooling technology allows for higher density of equipment. We expect to see an improvement of 15 to 20 percent in terms of cooling efficiency when compared to our first data centre."

Over The Wire claims to have pre-sold almost 50 percent of the available co-location space and says it "envisages strong demand for the remaining racks."
