Microsoft today released Visual Studio 2010, the latest version of its developer tools. As a bonus, Silverlight 4 will be available later in the week.

New features in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 fall into several areas.

They include support for Windows 7 multitouch and 'ribbon' interfaces, integrated phone design surfaces for Windows Phone 7, and support for Azure (Microsoft's cloud technology).

The Visual Studio editor now supports multiple monitors so different aspects of a project (eg, code, user interface designer, and database structure) can be displayed simultaneously. Developers also have integrated access to SharePoint from inside Visual Studio.

IntelliTrace is a new feature that records an application's execution history, guaranteeing that bugs can be reproduced.

"Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 have something for every developer and deployment platform - classic, mobile or cloud," said Joerg Lindner, product manager developer tools at Microsoft Australia.

Supporting products from third-party developers have also arrived for Visual Studio 2010 - please read on.
