Amazon has come up with another web service: Amazon Simple Notification Service.

Amazon already offers a range of cloud services including computation (EC2), storage (S3) and database (SimpleDB). The underlying idea is that you only pay for what you use, and that you can use as much or as little as you need.

The latest member of the family is Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS), which is now in public beta.

SNS provides mechanisms for developers to create 'topics', subscribe applications or people to these topics, and then push messages to those subscribers.

Notifications are currently delivered by HTTP, email, and Amazon Simple Queue Service. The same message can be delivered to different subscribers using different protocols.

Additional delivery mechanisms - including SMS - are under consideration. Amazon also plans to support SNS in the AWS Management Console.
