NICTA spin-off Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) has announced general availability of its 'One Core' software for Android based phones, claiming it will enable semiconductor suppliers, handset manufacturers and mobile network operators to streamline the development and delivery of low-cost, mass-market Android smartphones.
It adds that OKL4 Microvisor 4.0 "offers the wireless/mobile ecosystem a shorter and smoother path to deployment, with patent-pending performance enhancements, and a new framework for developing and optimising device drivers and abstracting hardware variations among Android-based handsets and other wireless devices."
The OKL4 Microvisor 4.0 is also claimed to offer "superior security to support mobile payments, and to provide secure connectivity between mobile workers and business-critical enterprise assets in the data centre and the cloud."
According to OK Labs, One Core is compatible with a wide range of mobile CPUs and chips from ST-Ericsson, TI, Qualcomm, and others and supports both low-cost single-core and advanced multicore mobile processors.
