Internet Explorer 9 preview available

Business IT - Technology

The first preview release of Internet Explorer 9 is available, and it's looking pretty snappy.

Microsoft used its MIX10 conference to release Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview, the first publicly available version of the company's next-generation browser, and to make announcements concerning OData and jQuery.

Standards compliance and performance appear to be the main themes of Internet Explorer 9.

Microsoft said it will support various parts of the HTML5 specification, including CSS3, SVG and XHTML parsing. The audio and video tags will also be supported, using the H.264 and MPEG4 for video, and MP3 and AAC for audio.

The idea behind the audio and video tags is that it should be possible to embed these types of content in a web page just as if they were images, and that they should play without requiring the installation of a plug-in.

One concern that had been expressed about HTML5 video is that different browser developers are free to support whichever codecs they favour.

Why is that an issue? What else is new in IE9? Please read on.
