Some of the new features in Aperture 3, the latest version of Apple's pro photo editing and management software, were first seen in iPhoto.
Apple claims there are more than 200 new features in Aperture 3, the new version of the photo editing and management package for Mac OS X that's aimed at professional and prosumer users.
First seen in iPhoto, the Faces feature helps organise libraries by automatically recognising people's faces. The program includes a specific view that displays faces that have been detected by not named.
Another feature inherited from iPhoto is Places, which groups together photos taken at the same location. It uses location information from GPS enabled cameras (including the iPhone; if your main camera doesn't support GPS but your phone does, taking at least one picture with the phone at each location is an easy way of geotagging the images), or photos can be dropped onto a map within Aperture.
In addition to simplifying the organisation of photo libraries, Aperture 3 also addresses the editing side.
Brushes allows commonly used effects such as dodge or burn to be applied by 'painting' onto the images. Brushes can automatically detect edges, removing the need to mess with masks and layers.
