Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The GSM Association (GSMA) and Intel plan to drive the adoption of 3G modems and SIM cards into laptop computers to enable users to connect and seamlessly roam across global mobile networks.
They plan to collaborate to develop guidelines for this integration and to enable automatic connection to both 3GSM networks and Wi-Fi networks around the world. (This functionality along with roaming onto its 2G GSM network is already available in Australia from Optus).
The GSMA and Intel say they "seek to engage organisations critical to market implementation, including mobile operators, PC manufacturers and network infrastructure providers." Rob Conway, CEO of the GSMA, said: "Our goal is to ensure that in future, every notebook will be SIM ready."
Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Mobility Group, claimed that many 2006 laptop models would be 3G enabled. "During 2006, many of our customers will offer Intel Centrino Mobile Technology laptops that not only feature built in Wi-Fi technology, but also an internal 3GSM data card and an integrated SIM reader.
The GSMA says it has laid the groundwork for seamless roaming scenarios between networks of mixed technology infrastructure and the usage of the SIM card to provide WiFi access control and billing.
