Seagate's skinny hard drive

A new hard drive from Seagate is just 7mm high. It's also relatively cheap.

Seagate's Momentus Thin drive is a 2.5in model - making it relatively cheap compared with 1.8in models or solid state drives - but its height of 7mm suits netbooks and thin notebook designs.

That's what Seagate claims, at least - the company didn't mention prices as part of its announcement.

"The Momentus Thin drive promises to help computer makers differentiate on mobile-computing form factor and better compete in the fast-growing markets for thin laptop PCs and netbooks," said Dave Mosley, executive vice president of sales, marketing and product line management at Seagate.

"Seagate is committed to helping its OEM and system integrator partners meet market demand for thinner laptop PCs and plans to expand storage capabilities for thin laptops as demand for these slimmer models continues to grow," Mosley added.

Two Momentus Thin models have been announced, storing 160GB and 250GB. Both feature 5400rpm, 8MB cache, and 3Gbps SATA.

Shipments are scheduled to begin in January 2010.
