Samsung lifts the bada kimono, slightly

Business IT - Technology

Samsung has revealed a few more details of bada, its open mobile handset platform due to be formally launched in London next month.

Samsung announced bada earlier this month claiming it would be "one of the most developer-friendly environments available, particularly in the area of applications using Web services."

Now, in a new posting on the bada web site, www.bada.com it "explains the important architectural features you will need to know to get the most out of bada."

It says bada will have a four layer architecture. For developers the most important is the framework layer, which "can export standard open APIs in C++, and it consists of application framework and functions exported by underlying layers."  Samsung says that "Using this layer, you are able to create innovative applications on the bada platform!"

Other layers are:
- The kernel layer, which "can be based on a real-time OS or Linux kernel, depending on hardware configuration;"

- The device layer, which "provides the core functions as a device platform such as system and security management, graphics and window system, data protocols and telephony, audio-visual and multimedia management, and so on;"

- The service layer, which "provides service-centric functions that are provided by application engines – such as messaging and contact management – and web-service components interconnecting with bada server;'

Samsung promises that more information will be available "soon" on the bada blog.
