IEEE approves mobile WiMAX standard

Business IT - Technology

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has approved the long awaited and much-hyped 802.16e standard, the so-called mobile WiMax standard.

The new standard will be known as 802.16-2005 (the fixed WiMAX standard 802.16d is officially 802.16-2004). Trials and certification testing by the WiMAX Forum are now expected to take place early in 2006 and the first products to be available in late 2006 or 2007.

Unlike 802.16-2004, 802.16-2005 specifies that communication be maintained when the terminal moves between two base stations, so will enable fully mobile broadband wireless services.
