Burgeoning Bluetooth: 9.5m units per week

Business IT - Technology

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group claims that, worldwide 9.5 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. Double the number in May.

It says the increase has exceeded even the most optimistic analyst projections. "Bluetooth technology has once again proved itself as the wireless technology for the personal area network," said Bluetooth SIG executive director, Michael Foley.

The Bluetooth SIG has launched a series of consumer programs to "encourage similar implementations for different product categories and enhance the users' understanding of expected performance."

These include
* Experience icons: "a ubiquitous cross-industry communications tool for product manufacturers to communicate Bluetooth capabilities in products, achieving more informed purchase decisions by consumers and thus managing expectations."

* www.bluetooth.com, the official website where the industry and consumers can gather information about Bluetooth. Early next year, the Bluetooth SIG plans to upgrade the site with the aim of "facilitating education, and providing improved navigation, structure, search and unique tools that will help consumers understand the Bluetooth capabilities of various products."
