iiNet claims 10,000 VoIP customers & 1000/week growth

iiNet, Australia's third largest ISP, says  it is signing almost 1,000 subscribers per week to its residential VoIP service, and has passed the 10,000 subscriber mark.

iiNet launched iinetphone, its VoIP offering, less than three months ago and already claims to be one of the largest VoIP providers in Australia. In November alone, its customers racked up over one million minutes of calls.

"We have the largest customer base of high speed ADSL users in Australia, so it was a natural progression to use some of that bandwidth for VoIP services," said Greg Bader, chief technology officer, iiNet.

The service is based on BroadSoft's BroadWorks hosted IP telephony platform used also by Telstra, AAPT and IP Systems in Australia. It supports a range of features including caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, and simultaneous ring, where both the home phone and a mobile phone can ring at the same time.

BroadSoft has a strong presence in Australia, which is the location of its AsiaPac headquarters and its software development group, created by the September 2005 acquisition of Sydney based software developer, Carbon Twelve.
