Gov 2.0 Project Fund details out shortly

Business IT - Technology

The Commonwealth’s Government 2.0 Taskforce will announce within weeks application details for Web innovators seeking grants through the taskforce’ $2.45 million Project Fund.

The Taskforce met in Canberra today to discuss the Project Fund issue, and to finalise a series of innovation competitions it will run through the Government 2.0 process that will attract healthy prizes from the Project Fund pool.

Taskforce chairman Nicolas Gruen said although the Project Fund would seed ideas that would be included in the Government 2.0 Taskforce reporting process – reporting to Finance Minister Lndsay Tanner by the end of the year – and may also provide backing for projects that run beyond December.

“There are a range of projects that we’d like to see completed – funded and completed – by the end of the year, so that we can have them feed into our final report,” Dr Gruen said.

“But there is scope for projects that might extend beyond that date,” he said, adding taskforce is trying to get “get details for funding out there as quickly as possible.”

Different Project Fund initiatives would be announced that would ensure the maximum participation of innovators from both the private sector, as well as departments agencies and councils from all levels of Government.

The Project Fund is a $2.45 million fund available to the Taskforce to support the development of Web 2.0 tools and applications that either enable engagement between government and the community or support the innovative use of government information.

The Project Fund was established in partnership with Microsoft from a special Service Provision Fund (SPF) that was created as a part of Microsoft’s sourcing arrangement with the Federal Government. A portion of revenue from sales to Government between 2001 and 2008 were tipped into the SPF, which Lindsay Tanner then steered to the Gov 2.0 Taskforce.
