Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.5.8 update for Leopard, along with a new Security Update for Tiger.

By the end of July it seemed apparent that Apple was preparing to release Mac OS X 10.5.8, and much as expected the update appeared overnight.

Highlights include Safari 4.0.2 with improved history search, as well as reliability improvements to Bluetooth, iCal with MobileMe Sync and CalDav, iDisk and MobileMe, AirPort networks, Sync Service, AFP, and the import of large photo and movie files form digital cameras.

10.5.8 also provides additional RAW image support, improved compatibility with certain external USB hard drives, and a fix for an issue that could cause extended startup times.

In addition, all reelvant resolutions should now appear in the Display system preference, Automator now invokes Aperture actions (not iPhoto actions) on Aperture images, and the overall reliability of Managed Client has been improved.

The update also delivers 18 security patches.

Six of them provide protection against malicious image files. The handling of Canon RAW and OpenEXR files is changed, and there's also improved checking of EXIF metadata and embedded ColorSync profiles.

What else has been fixed? Please read on.
