Wrangling Twitter in the workplace

Business IT - Technology

Blue Coat Systems today announced that their PacketShaper product is now capable of detecting and managing Twitter usage for their corporate customers.

PacketShaper is a tool to monitor network traffic as it passes through a corporate firewall with a view to "discover, monitor and control" as the company points out in a recent press release.  In fact they claim to identify over 600 applications for this purpose.  From the release, "PacketShaper appliances enable enterprises to gain a comprehensive understanding of how employees utilise social networking tools and set policies to manage them."

"Understanding which social media tools are being utilised and how employees are using them is valuable information that helps network administrators set and enforce corporate policies," said Steve House, Director of Product Marketing at Blue Coat Systems.  "Blue Coat PacketShaper appliances provide the visibility, actionable intelligence and control that enable enterprises to fully realise the value of their network investments."

There has been plenty of recent discussion (here for instance) about the growing use of Twitter as a corporate tool, so any technique to control it within the workplace must ensure that those people authorised to use it are not restricted in their use.  Managing corporate interests in the social networking space is a very finely-tuned balancing act – any time the impression of 'control' is apparent to the social networkers, the resulting perception is almost always bad.

Quoted in the Blue Coat release, "According to a survey by Awareness, 75 percent of employees were already using social networking sites for business purposes in 2008, an increase of 15 percent from 2007.  The same survey also found that 61 percent of businesses use social networking to improve communication and collaboration."

"With the visibility provided by PacketShaper appliances, network managers can set and enforce corporate IT policies to optimise and accelerate business applications and block or limit non-business applications."

One must always be careful that the tools provided are not blunted by overly-broad or heavy-handed application.

The new Twitter extension is available for immediate download for existing Blue Coat customers.
