China delays implementation of Internet filter

Business IT - Technology

According to China's official Xinhua news agency, the Chinese government has backed away from its plan to force computer manufacturers to include Internet filtering technology on systems sold in that country.

The so-called "Green Dam" technology was supposedly intended to block Internet pornography in China, but privacy advocates alleged that the pornography claim was a smokescreen for an attempt to censor politically sensitive material.

Last week, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke sent a letter to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce raising the possibility that the filtering software would be a trade barrier in violation of World Trade Organization rules.

As reported by Reuters , the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology would "delay the mandatory installation of the controversial 'Green Dam-Youth Escort' filtering software on new computers."

Reuters quoted Beijing Internet entrepreneur Wang Junxiu as saying, "They never expected the backlash would be so vehement.

"This will just peter out now and the government will hope it will be soon forgotten, I'd say."

The requirement was set to go into effect on July 1; no new target date was given by the Ministry.
