Spam levels stable: Symantec

Business IT - Technology

"Spammers have learned the importance of having a backup for command and control channels," added Wood.

The remaining 6.8 percent of spam is said to originate from sources such as compromised mail servers and webmail accounts.

The most heavily spammed nations are France (96.1 percent of all emails are spam), Germany (96.0 percent), Austria (94.9 percent), Belgium (94.3 percent) and Switzerland (94.1 percent).

The US and Canada do relatively well at 78.4 and 72.2 percent respectively, while Japan enjoys a low rate of 67.1 percent - assuming that more than two spams for every genuine message can be regarded as low.

At 88.8 percent, Australia is running a little below the global spam rate.

However, the incidence of mail-borne malware was highest in Australia, with 1 in 68.8 messages. Corresponding figures for other countries include 1 in 371.7 in the US, 1 in 444.0 in Germany, and 1 in 235.7 in Japan.

Symantec also warns of an increase in the proportion of instant messages that contain links to malicious sites. The figure was 1 in 200 at the end of 2008, but that had risen to 1 in 78 by June.
