There have also been reports of hackers, both inside and ouside Iran, launching denial of service (DDOS) and other attacks against official Iranian sites.
According to
Wikinews last Friday, for example, "the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) website has been hacked and is suffering from an apparent distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS)....an individual or group claims responsibility for attacking the website on an Iranian internet forum.
"As part of the attack, at least one section of the IRIB website, an apparent user space, was replaced with what appears to be videos and images of protests within Iran. The page also contains the statement 'hacked by the Iranian people.'"
The Iranian government fired back, charging that Western news agencies -- specifically, BBC, Voice of America, and CNN -- were "training" people in how to hack government websites.
According to
CNN , Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi accused "everyone working" at those news agencies of seeking the "weakening of Iran's unity" and the "disintegration" of the country because of their ties to Israel.
"They officially trained the people to come and hack Iran's government Web sites," said Qasqavi. "Isn't [this] a cyber war of the media with an independent government? They asked people to use the DOS system to hack our Web sites."
CNN labeled the accusations "completely false."
