Google, MySpace promoting a faster Web

Business IT - Technology

Google has launched an effort to encourage and help Web developers create faster sites and applications. As part of the effort, the company has released a tool for evaluating the performance of Web pages, and MySpace has also turned a similar tool over to the open source community.

On the Official Google Blog, senior vice presidents Urs Hoelzle and Bill Coughran write that "we've identified some performance best practices that we'd like to share with the web community."

To that end, Google has set up a resource site for Web developers, containing tips, tutorials, and tools for measuring performance.

The tips and tutorial pages have articles covering such topics as optimizing graphics, proper use of style sheets, optimizing JavaScript, and prefetching advice.

The tools page has links to various development and speed measurement tools available for download.

Top of the list is Google's own new Page Speed Firefox/Firebog add-on that lets developers test a page's performance and provides suggestions on how to remove bottlenecks.

(A Page Speed tutorial is available on the tutorial page.)

The tools page also has links to development aids from other sources, such as AOL Page Test, IBM Page Detailer, the Microsoft Visual Round Trip Analyzer, and Yahoo's YSlow.

For more on speeding up the Web, see Page 2.
